How do you learn your true market value, when people, particularly white men (who are historically paid more) refuse to share their pay and say things like “that’s illegal for you to ask for me to tell you” (it’s not, it’s federally protected conversation) or “I can be fired for telling you that” (also illegal federally and in most states)? Often times, sites like Glassdoor may be displaying information that is out of date or doesn’t gather equitable identifying to measure against. I’m really frustrated with the pay secrecy around creative positions that contributes to women and people of color being undercut their true value.
