The Houston Chronicle is seeking an aggressive journalist who thrives in the fast-paced digital news cycle to join our newsroom. This reporter will cover a wide range of news, quickly and accurately. We’re looking for someone who loves beating the competition and reaching the widest possible audience. Covering public safety is an integral part of the job.
This reporter is a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, embraces tight deadlines and values collaboration with editors and reporters. The ideal candidate has a proven track record of finding smart angles in big news moments that distinguishes us from our competitors and can build on breaking news with smart enterprise ideas in the days and weeks that follow. Experience tracking down court records and other documents is a plus.
This role may include night and weekend work.
What will you do?
- This is a “go anywhere, do anything” reporting position for someone who lives to break news. The position requires someone who relishes stepping into a new topic and reporting and writing quickly and often.
- Ability to provide all elements for a breaking news story (i.e., photos, video)
- Be ready to own the biggest story of the day as well as find angles that answer people’s questions about the day’s biggest news that they can't get anywhere else.
- Work collaboratively with editors, reporters, photographers and the audience team to tell impactful stories that attract and retain readers and subscribers.
- Write sharp headlines that utilize that make our work stand out on search and reach a wide audience.
Requirements
- At least three years of reporting experience
- Proven track record of working in a fast-paced breaking news environment
- Ability to write with clarity and authority
- Proficiency in AP style and grammar
- Comfortable using social media to report and promote stories
- Excellent news judgment
- Familiarity with SEO best practices, including sharp headline writing
- Strong understanding of audience analytics and how to use them to drive content decisions
