What You'll be Doing: The Sr. Content Editor - Acquisitions Editor is responsible for contributing to the growth of the Nursing Education and Practice portfolios through the signing and publication of exceptional content that delights our customers. As the sponsor for textbooks, digital assets, and videos, you are accountable for defining vision and scope and executing on a strategy that ensures editorial quality and profitability, as well as the overall management of core content across the nursing continuum to ensure sustainable growth. You will establish a network of authors, SMEs, and item writers and will be responsible for regularly vetting and expanding your network of connections. You will strategically acquire first editions and new content assets, pursue mutually beneficial partnerships, secure revisions for existing books and digital assets, and publish content that is appropriate for multiple digital platforms. Collaboration with marketing, sales, product managers, and content development is vital to this role to ensure successful publications and product launches. You will define new publishing opportunities, review and modify existing content to maximize profitability and meet customer needs, and take a customer-centric approach to growing the business. You will work with marketing and sales colleagues to expand opportunities and maintain an awareness of new trends and developments. You will aspire to continually learn and increase your understanding of the nursing education and practice markets, including curricula, trends, market size, existing and emerging competitors, and growth opportunities. You will manage relationships with key partners to achieve growth and brand awareness, including authors, SMEs, and societies. You will seek opportunities to leverage existing content within the organization for to expanded audiences. The Sr. Content Editor - Acquisitions Editor is responsible for managing the budget for disciplines in the Nursing Education and Practice portfolios and ensuring that products achieve their required contribution margin to grow the business. Key Tasks:
- Market research/customer insight
- Annual forecasting for disciplines
- Three-year planning of sales and signings for revision and new titles
- Completion of business plans that detail market trends, customer needs, competitive landscape, and publishing plan related to these elements
- Acquiring new content and revisions
- Working with authors to complete proposals
- Finding new authors and SMEs
- Developing relationships with thought leaders as reviewers and content providers
- Exploring ideas for new content assets to support digital products
- Complete publishing proposals for internal review and approval, including sales forecasting, costs (working with Product Managers), and P&Ls
- Negotiating contracts with authors and societies
- Research and initiate new ideas by interviewing customers to ensure products are developed based on market needs
- In partnership with product development, marketing, and sales, develop customer-facing product messaging and go-to-market strategies
- Sponsoring the development process
- Working with the Development Editor, Editorial Coordinator, Product Manager, Content Strategist, and others to achieve on-time, in-scope, in-budget products
- Ensuring authors and SMEs are delivering high quality manuscript/content as scheduled
- Mitigate issues that come up during the development process related to competitive, market, and customer developments, and/or author/resource issues
- Management of the P&L
- Monitor sales and costs lines of the P&L ensuring sales and costs are on target and on budget by:
- Overseeing sales opportunities, working with sales colleagues to ensure the meeting of budget targets, and ultimately the increasing revenue
- Working with product managers, marketing, and sales colleagues for effective product launches and sales support for all disciplines including creation and execution of market development plans at the beginning of the product development life cycle
- Campus and exhibit travel to ensure a depth and breadth of market/customer needs and new opportunities for product
- Monitor profitability of existing products, and build franchises for key brands across multiple disciplines
- Monitor sales and costs lines of the P&L ensuring sales and costs are on target and on budget by:
- College degree (BA/BS) required or equivalent relevant experience
- 3+ years of experience, including 3 years with editorial acquisitions/strategy/product management (preferred) or development, sales, or marketing in higher education publishing or related field
- Knowledge of trends, developments, and professionals/thought leaders/authors in assigned specialties desired
- Experience with oversight of print and online product development
- Skilled in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- High degree of professionalism
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
- Strong project management skills
- Ability to develop strategic business plans
- Ability to determine customer needs and market trends
