Director & Counsel – American Express Global Dining

The U.S. Consumer Services team of the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) is seeking a Director & Counsel to support Global Dining. The Global Dining team’s mission is to continually define the company’s dining strategy, with a focus on supporting some of the world’s best restaurants, using technology to imagine the future of hospitality and developing Card Member dining benefits. The position will work closely with business partners, legal professionals in the GCO, as well as stakeholders across the enterprise, to provide day-to-day support on a diverse array of legal issues.

Here's just some of what you’ll do in this role:

  • Participate as part of a team of seasoned attorneys serving as the primary business lawyers and strategic advisors to the American Express Global Dining business

  • Provide legal advice and strategic support to business clients responsible for American Express’s Global Dining strategy on a wide range of matters, including strategic negotiations, benefit development initiatives, customer marketing and customer communications, issue and dispute resolution, and process improvements

  • Support contract drafting and negotiations for a broad range of agreements, with varying complexity. Examples include commercial contracts with restaurants, hospitality groups and other strategic partners, sponsorship agreements, talent and event agreements

  • Partner with Global Dining marketing organization to enhance engagement and approval processes, and to review and approve marketing materials, terms and other disclosures

  • Support the development, implementation and ongoing delivery of dining-related benefits in various consumer and commercial products and services, and maintain a holistic view of the legal and risk positions taken across different lines of business

  • Serve as the primary escalation point for critical issues of legal interpretation involving partnerships, benefit operations, customer experience, and related products and services

  • Form strong partnerships with business teams, GCO colleagues, Line of Business Compliance, Risk, Finance, Privacy, Global Marketing and Control Management teams to mitigate legal, operational, regulatory and reputational risks

  • Develop subject matter expertise on laws and regulations that impact consumer facing offers and benefits, including UDAAP

  • Provide support for ad-hoc special projects underpinning Amex’s broader US benefit and loyalty strategy

  • Collaborate across the General Counsel’s Organization to facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and J.D.

  • Admission to practice law in New York in good standing

  • 6+ years of relevant work experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience managing complex transactions in a highly regulated, deadline intensive environment

  • Proven ability to act as a trusted advisor and synthesize complex legal issues to senior business leaders

  • Ability to gain credibility, manage expectations and generate buy-in through relationship building and communication

  • High-energy, team oriented, self-starter with strong written and interpersonal communication skills, executive presence, and ability to effectively interact at all levels within the organization

  • Strong passion for developing creative solutions to issues as they arise

  • Must work well in cross-functional team settings and have a keen eye for initiating and driving end to end process improvements to enhance efficiency and productivity

  • Prior people leadership is a plus

Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
