The General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) at American Express is seeking a Manager & Counsel to support the Regulatory, Banking, Prepaid, Privacy & Data Law Team within the Global Enterprise Services group.  The successful candidate will be responsible for providing day-to-day legal and strategic advice on key prudential bank regulatory issues of importance to American Express.  This position requires regularly navigating novel business and legal issues across a broad range of matters and working seamlessly with colleagues on a global basis.  It also provides the opportunity to contribute to a host of strategic projects and to collaborate with colleagues across business units and the GCO on significant enterprise initiatives.

How will you make an impact in this role?

  • Monitor legal and regulatory developments and partner with GCO, Treasury, and Government Affairs colleagues to develop advocacy strategies on U.S. prudential bank regulatory matters of importance to American Express;

  • Support the American Express finance and treasury groups on the interpretation and implementation of new and revised capital and liquidity rules and related developments;

  • Conduct legal research and provide legal and strategic advice on U.S. prudential bank regulatory issues;

  • Provide legal support on matters related to depository organization management interlocks;

  • Participate on a small team of seasoned attorneys, offering thought leadership for, and engagement on, cross-subject matter practice group issues and strategic projects;

  • Collaborate with colleagues within the GCO and other groups; and

  • Routinely engage directly with internal clients across the enterprise to ensure the most effective support and relevant expertise is applied to particular matters.

Minimum Qualifications

  • J.D. with admission to practice law in New York or Washington, D.C.

  • 3+ years of relevant work experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment

  • Interest in developing a deep understanding of business needs and objectives with a close partnership with business clients

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with passion for generating creative and innovative solutions

  • Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, in both written and oral format, and to synthesize complex issues

  • Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills and ability to work well in cross-functional team settings

  • Ability to manage and prioritize competing demands while maintaining high attention to detail and meeting deadlines

  • Ability to understand and integrate details of business / enterprise environment and priorities in applying legal and policy requirements

  • Intellectually curious and self-motivated, high level of personal energy and commitment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience advising on U.S. prudential (non-consumer) bank regulatory matters e.g., current and proposed capital and liquidity rules, Regulations Y and YY, brokered deposits and related matters

  • Experience working with banks, payment networks, financial institutions

  • Strong executive presence and ability to influence stakeholders

  • Demonstrated ability to build excellent relationships

  • Willingness and flexibility to be a team player and take on new responsibilities and challenges

  • Strong interest and/or experience in digital products and emerging technology

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Salary Range: $110,000.00 to $190,000.00 annually + bonus + benefits
