DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Materials Science Engineering Technical Specialist to join our team specializing in Bearing Technology for Cummins, Inc. in Troy, MI.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Problem-Solving Leadership : You’ll lead the investigation of material processes and issues, understand the underlying causes, and guide resolutions, documenting the outcomes with insights from seasoned team members.
  • Process Enhancement : By applying and refining validation and auditing processes, and using advanced material characterization and testing tools, you’ll facilitate better decision-making based on quality data.
  • Collaborative Negotiation : You’ll work with Quality, Supply Chain, and Engineering peers to deliver solutions that ensure success for both internal teams and external customer success.
  • Quality Decision Making : Your choices in material selection and development will directly influence the quality, reliability, durability, and capability of products.
  • Standards Development : You’ll be responsible for creating and improving material specifications and standards, ensuring they meet performance and quality requirements.
  • Project Leadership : You’ll independently lead smaller projects or manage complex components, providing clear direction and accountability to your project team.
  • Process and System Execution : You’ll carry out both established and new work processes and systems, contributing to the development of technology and product knowledge.
  • Knowledge Transfer : You’ll coordinate work among technicians and student employees, and mentor less experienced engineers, shaping the technical direction within your project team.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Statistical Analysis - Understand and apply statistical methods such as descriptive statistics,probability distributions, and statistical inference.Be proficient in modelingrelationships using analysis of variance, regression, anddesign of experiments.
  • Material and Process Selections - Assess component requirements to choose the appropriate materials and processes. Ensure the selected options are validated through a comprehensive test plan.
  • Problem Solving - Employ industry-standard methodologies for problem-solving. Mentor others in these processes, establish traceability, determine causes, and implement solutions to prevent recurrence.
  • Characterize Materials Effectively: Interpret mechanical, chemical, microstructural, and physical properties to ensure compliance and robustness. Schedule and conduct material characterization accurately.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • This position is for a bearing subject matter expert.
  • Responsible for application and development of various Cummins Drivetrain and Brake System bearings.
  • Provide technical expertise to engineering projects, meet project requirements, budget and timeline.
  • Provide ongoing consultation, problem resolution, and failure analysis to resolve performance and application issues.
  • Support global bearing sourcing activities.
  • Keep abreast of bearing technology developments and their relevance to CDBS products.
  • Document bearing knowledge, lessons learned and best practices.
  • Ten years or relevant experience in bearing technology.
  • Thorough knowledge of bearing manufacturing processes and quality requirements.
  • Responsible for bearing testing and interpretation of test data.

Compensation

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate’s qualifications and experience, where appropriate.
