DESCRIPTION

This applied science position conducts numerical computations via third-party and in-house tools to determine the structural performance of components and systems. The results from the computer models are used to determine the validity of the design in meeting customer requirements. Design recommendations are then provided as needed. This role also evaluates software and methods, providing improvement recommendations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to evaluate stress, strain, vibration, and fatigue behaviors of axles and brake components and assemblies using ANSYS WorkBench.
  • Analyze FEA results, generate comprehensive reports, and provide recommendations for design improvements.
  • Collaborate with the design team to optimize product designs for manufacturability, performance, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, product designers, and manufacturing teams, to integrate FEA results into the design process.
  • Identify issues and bottlenecks in product designs and recommend alternative solutions.
  • Utilize FEA software tools such as ANSYS, HyperMesh, and Fluent.
  • Stay updated with the latest FEA techniques, software updates, and industry best practices.
  • Obtain input and negotiate with Design, Thermal Sciences, Materials, and Product Validation teams to deliver key structural performance parameters.
  • Apply and improve computer modeling processes to estimate motion, load, natural frequencies, stress, design margin, life, and sound power.
  • Use tools such as ANSYS, Ncode, Genesis and basics of Creo to support modeling processes and enable high-quality decision-making.
  • Provide independent leadership for smaller business impact projects or ownership of complex components, products, systems, or services.
  • Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems within the discipline area.
  • Coordinate and direct work among technicians and temporary student employees, assisting in knowledge transfer to less experienced engineers.
  • Provide support and guidance to influence technical direction within a project team and develop proficiency in key competency areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Competencies:

  • Applies Principles of Dynamics and Vibration: Determines motion of components and systems through numerical modeling and physical measurements, evaluating rigid and flexible body motion, natural frequencies, mode shapes, and wear.
  • Applies Principles of Fatigue and Durability: Determines component and system life via numerical modeling and physical measurements, evaluating factors such as temperatures, natural frequencies, displacements, strains/stresses, and fatigue life.
  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis: Impacts product design decisions using computational tools and methods to predict product functionality at the system, sub-system, and component levels.
  • Product Problem Solving: Identifies and resolves product problems using a structured process to determine root causes, implement data-driven solutions, and prevent reoccurrence.
  • Systems Modeling and Simulation: Develops models of systems or system elements using analytical tools to derive insights and support quality decision-making.
  • Builds Networks: Establishes and maintains formal and informal relationships within and outside the organization.
  • Communicates Effectively: Tailors communication to different audiences and delivers clear, multi-mode messages.
  • Decision Quality: Makes sound, timely decisions that drive organizational success.
  • Drives Results: Consistently delivers results, even under challenging circumstances.
  • Manages Complexity: Navigates complex and contradictory information to solve problems effectively.
  • Resourcefulness: Secures and deploys resources efficiently.
  • Values Differences: Recognizes the value of diverse perspectives and cultural backgrounds.

Skills and Experience:

  • Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline is required, with a demonstrated track record of technical problem-solving and quality decision-making.
  • Experience with MS Office tools, Matlab, Python, APDL-ANSYS, FORTRAN or C programming, Windows/Linux operating systems, and high-performance computing systems is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Licenses, and Certifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related STEM field is required.
  • A Master’s degree relevant to this discipline may be required for select roles.
