About Meta:
Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
Optical Engineer, Display Optics Design Responsibilities:
- Research and conceive of optical design architectures to meet user-experience and product requirements, and quantify trade-offs.
- Mature optical designs through rigorous tolerance analysis, design for manufacturing assessment with internal and supplier partners, and hold continuous specification allocation discussions with down-stream stakeholders.
- Build partnerships with internal teams and external industry partners to prepare optical designs for mass production.
- Contribute to plans for design validation, learning cycles and module builds, and supports execution for the evaluation of prototype optical systems. Tracks plans with internal team members and communicates outcomes with stakeholders and leadership.
- Build predictive optical models, validate designs and model with measured data to close the loop.
- Support module build and system integration activities at external vendors.
- Support design validation, lab characterization and failure analysis of optical modules and systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MS or PhD degree in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field.
- 5+ years of industry plus academic experience in designing complex optical systems in highly multidisciplinary environments, including setting specifications and determining test methods.
- Experience with one or more of the following optics domains: imaging optics, lens design, radiometry and photometry, geometric optics, projector design.
- Experience with sequential and non-sequential tolerance analysis of optical modules, and specification of optical tolerances for manufacturability.
- Experience working with optical design software such as Zemax, CodeV or LightTools.
- Experience using scripting languages and data analysis tools such Matlab, Python or JMP.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 2+ years of experience working with external suppliers to deliver custom optical components, modules, or systems, where demanding optical requirements drive new opto-mechanical integration and metrology techniques.
- Experience designing and modeling optical systems using tools such as Zemax, Code V or others.
- Familiarity with display technologies such as OLEDs, LCDs, LCOS and uLEDs.
- Experience with multiple full life cycle product launches.
- Process development and failure analysis experience for optical components and modules such as cameras, sensors, or illumination/projector systems.
