The Role This position sits within the Condé Nast Legal team supporting editorial and business colleagues across a wide range of legal issues relating to our content. The successful candidate will advise editorial teams on pre- and post- publication IP and media law queries, respond to demands and disputes, support IP protection globally, assist with content transactions and provide business-oriented legal guidance for content, across UK and international markets. The Team The Condé Nast Legal & Policy team is led by the General Counsel based in our London HQ and is comprised of colleagues in London, New York, China, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Mexico, India, Japan and Taiwan. We are also supported by a network of outside counsel and work closely with colleagues in Advance Legal who provide legal counsel to Condé Nast and our parent company, Advance Publications. What will you be doing?
- Assess and advise on legal risks relating to our content, including defamation, privacy, images rights, trademark and copyright infringement.
- Work with a broad range of departments (Editorial, Business Affairs, Production Management, Rights & Clearances, Syndication and Risk & Insurance) on content and business matters.
- Manage cross-border projects with ease, involving stakeholders, third parties, and legal experts from different markets to deliver cohesive and centralised legal support.
- Assist with creation of materials for, and delivery of, frequent training sessions for editorial and production teams on IP matters.
- Research and advise on IP queries including on AI matters, content clearance, trademark, copyright, defamation and privacy.
- Respond to third party claims relating to our content, across all brands globally.
- Support IP enforcement globally, including drafting cease and desist correspondence.
- Supporting the drafting and negotiation of a range of content agreements, including contributor agreements, talent agreements and releases, across text, photo, video and audio/podcasts, as well as production agreements for audiovisual content.
- Support the development and roll out of new agreement templates for the UK business.
- Excellent researching, drafting, analytical, negotiation, interpersonal, communication, organisational, problem-solving and time management skills.
- Knowledge of copyright law required.
- Knowledge of libel and privacy laws strongly preferred, but not required.
- Some experience drafting contributor agreements, talent agreements, releases or production agreements preferred, but not required.
- Capable of building strong internal client relationships at all levels of editorial and the wider business, with the ability to effectively advise clients under conditions of uncertainty, high-pressure and/or high-risk.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively cross-functionally, thinking practically and being solution-oriented.
- Ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and proactively identify opportunities for improvement.
- A track record of taking ownership of projects and seeing them through to completion with enthusiasm and determination.
- Experience collaborating with a team facing a high volume of work and competing priorities.
- Experience working with or in a publishing, media or entertainment business, ideally in a global or multi market role, preferred.
- UK qualified, PQE 1-4.
