- Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders to make metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions.
- Interprets blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications.
- Determines sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup.
- Use a variety of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments. Make standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds.
- Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining.
- Fit and assemble precision parts into mechanical equipment and determine material, parts, and equipment required.
- Monitor and verify quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2 years of related machinist experience
- Experience with machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, planers, and precision grinders.
- Good fine motor skills.
- Willingness and capability to learn new tasks.
- Good communication skills to effectively interact with peers for training and workflow coordination.
- 2-year technical associate's degree
- Completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
- Experience with machines that are numerically controlled.
