Job Summary
The Machinist – Level I is an entry-level skilled trades role participating in a formal apprenticeship or skilled trades training program. Under direct guidance, this position supports site machinists by developing foundational tool room and machining skills in a manufacturing environment. The role focuses on learning safe work practices, completing required technical training and on-the-job hours, and assisting with machining, equipment maintenance, and continuous improvement activities in support of operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)
- Stop work and immediately report major injury hazards, unsafe conditions, or incidents.
- Report all work-related injuries, illnesses, hazards, or near-miss incidents.
- Comply with Cummins HSE standards, policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and promote an interdependent safety culture.
- Correct hazards within control and capability and recognize environmental impacts of work activities.
- Participate in required HSE training and safety improvement initiatives.
Quality
- Learn and apply high standards of workmanship and craftsmanship in all assigned tasks.
- Perform supervised work using diagrams, sketches, operation manuals, and specifications.
- Use appropriate tools, measuring, and testing instruments under guidance.
- Support equipment uptime and assist in downtime and failure analysis activities.
- Provide feedback into the Preventive Maintenance system.
- Follow all process documentation and quality procedures.
- Perform quality inspections and raise issues to minimize cost and quality risks.
Delivery & Operations
- Attend required classes to develop basic tool room and machining skills.
- Complete all required on-the-job training hours as part of the apprenticeship program.
- Assist in repairing and maintaining manufacturing equipment within capability.
- Support preventive, corrective, emergency, and predictive maintenance activities.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area, including routine housekeeping and machine cleaning.
- Identify and help reduce manufacturing constraints.
- Participate in problem-solving, process improvement, and continuous improvement activities.
Teamwork & Development
- Communicate effectively with assigned teams and support functions.
- Participate actively in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) teams to improve safety, quality, delivery, and employee development.
- Complete training and personal development activities aligned with business requirements.

Qualifications
- High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education, or equivalent experience meeting applicable regulatory requirements.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, and learning.
- This position may require licensing or authorization to comply with export control or sanctions regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS
Skills and Experience
- Minimal or no prior work experience required for external candidates.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn machining and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to follow documented procedures, instructions, and safety standards.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills in a shop-floor environment.
Additional Qualifications – Internal Candidates
- 3–4 years of relevant machining or shop-floor experience.
- Hands-on experience with:
- CNC machine operation and setup (VMC, HMC, Turning Centers)
- CNC program editing (Fanuc, Siemens, Mazak as applicable)
- Tool selection, offsets, and wear compensation
- In-process inspection and process monitoring
- Engineering drawing interpretation (GD&T)
- Fixture handling and job changeover
- Basic preventive maintenance activities
- Cutting parameters (feed, speed, depth of cut)
- Cycle time and productivity improvement initiatives
- Quality tools such as 5S, Kaizen, and root cause analysis
- Safety compliance and shop-floor discipline
