An organization within Northrop Grumman's Payload and Ground Systems (PGS) division, Mission Enabling Products is a leading designer, producer, and supplier of spacecraft components that power and enable satellites of all classes. Products include spacecraft panels, bus structures, precision optical structures, deployable structural systems and mechanisms, solar arrays, and antenna reflectors. Our products are on virtually every U.S. satellite built in the last 20 years. Integrated Thermal Systems (ITS) is a Northrop Grumman Mission Enabling Products team seeking an engineering manager to manage a team of approximately 15 design engineers and to interface with the programs they support. In addition to guiding each individual's careers and training, the manager will help ITS programs in estimating, tracking, and reporting design engineering efforts. This position is onsite, currently located in Beltsville, MD and in approximately a year it is relocating to Hanover, MD. Design Functional Manager - Integrated Thermal Systems, Beltsville, MD Team
- Manage a diverse pool of motivated design team resources in conjunction with other operating unit managers.
- Own the process of recruiting, requisition, hiring, onboarding, and interactions with HR for the entire team.
- Deploy resources to a range of programs to meet program needs.
- Develop and oversee training of team members.
- Provide technical oversight for product line lead designers.
- Facilitate employee development and conduct employee mid-year and year-end performance reviews.
- Ensure release of drawings meets program and operations schedule needs.
- Ensure designs are completed within budget constraints.
- Help ensure designs meet program technical requirements on a broad range of programs.
- Facilitate reviews with manufacturing engineering and operations value steam leaders.
- Handle escalations and resolve issues in a timely manner.
- Work to ensure compliance with customer and internal requirements.
- Help improve existing or develop new processes within the team and design tool to implement lessons learned, design best practices, and continuous product improvement. Develop documentation for these processes.
- Apply Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles to program execution.
- Manage Drawing Release Plan to track all program drawings and their due dates.
- Maintain Daily Management Review process (SQDEC).
- Track key performance indices of On-Time Delivery and First Pass Yield.
- Apply Earned Value Management System to track cost performance of design effort.
- Provide inputs for proposal efforts and approve basis of estimates.
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 7 years of engineering experience. 5 years of relevant experience with a Masters' degree; 2 years of relevant experience with a PhD; an additional 4 years of experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
- Experience as a Cost Account Manager (CAM).
- IPT/Integrated Product Team experience.
- Experience with product definition (Specifications, SOW's, Drawings), design, and verification processes.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to work within the United States without sponsorship.
- Demonstrated engineering leadership experience for a minimum of 2 years, ideally as a Product Team Lead.
- Proven experience leading teams/people within an engineering environment.
