Resourcing Manager Vicki Emerson's Take On Career Development Opportunities - From Travel to Cutting-Edge Technology

Why a Career at Thales Means You'll Never Stop Growing

Ever wondered how your data is protected when you check your account balance on your phone? Or enjoyed an in-flight movie? You may not have heard of Thales, but chances are you know their technology.

Thales creates advanced technology systems that impact everything from everyday experiences like checking your account balance, to the extraordinary advances in the aerospace, space, transportation, defense, and security industries.

If you're interested in helping to power the technology that governments, militaries, and individuals rely on each day to do their jobs, then consider a career at Thales, where you'll be able to grow and innovate at the same rate as the cutting-edge projects you're working on. Oh, and did we mention that for a serious tech company, they also offer some serious benefits (from 4 weeks minimum PTO to travel)? The technology they develop is no joke, but they know employees' well-being needs to be taken just as seriously.

To learn more about the culture of empathy and teamwork at Thales, we chatted with Vicki Emerson, Resourcing Manager for Thales InFlyt Experience (shoutout again to those in-flight movies!). She also leads the recruiting team, and recently got the opportunity to relocate from Melbourne, Australia to Irvine California with her family, all thanks to the international mobility offered by Thales!

After 11 years at Thales, we asked her to sum up her experience in just one word. "One word for Thales? That's hard, but I'll go with Global!" Distilling a company that works with so many industries across the world is no easy task, but Thales is truly global in all senses - from the composition of their team to the impact of their products. In the company's own words:

...World-class technology, the combined expertise of 65,000 employees, and operations in 56 countries have made Thales a key player in keeping the public safe and secure, guarding vital infrastructure and protecting the national security interests of countries around the globe.

Another great benefit of working for a truly global company is having the flexibility to move and keep your job. Pursuing a lifelong career with Thales doesn't mean having to stay in one place. That's how Vicki, originally from Melbourne, Australia, was able to relocate with her family in 2017 to sunny Irvine, CA.

I'm originally from Australia and I applied for an international assignment in the USA. Thales offers and encourages international mobility to its employees and you can travel and experience the world whilst you continue to pursue your career with Thales. I was placed in Irvine, California and we've been California dreaming ever since. We went on a 4 week RV trip over summer which covered all of California and we had the best time!

If the chance to travel and work on cutting edge technology has you eager to apply, but you're not sure how to make yourself stand out, Vicki has some easy advice - learn how to pronounce Thales! "Thales is pronounced as Alice with a T. Talice."

Secondly, and more seriously, she also recommends that anyone interested in applying, "Research Thales to understand where you fit into our organization. We cover various industries and deliver many products large and small! We are always seeking passionate, curious and innovative people to join our organization."

Even though the work is high tech, Thales offers a very human environment. "People are at the heart of what we do at Thales, which is why you'll find passionate, supportive, team-oriented and like-minded people." That's a big part of why Thales partners with PowerToFly:

We recognize that our people are all unique in their life experiences, skills and abilities. We want to be known for having a diverse workforce and valuing the range of backgrounds that represent our people through gender, age, LGBTI, ethnicity, religious and cultural backgrounds. We see PowerToFly as a way to connect and engage with Women in Tech and beyond.

As a mother herself, Vicki knows that "it's easy to lose who you are when you're managing a career, figuring out parenthood, managing a household, and striving to be a good mum/partner/friend/daughter/sister, etc." Her advice?

Prioritize things that make YOU happy and find an employer that supports you… I have been well supported at Thales - my managers have been accommodating throughout the eleven years, having achieved many personal milestones. If you are struggling to juggle all your commitments, I encourage you to speak up and raise [your concerns] with your manager.

Interested in working in a supportive, understanding environment that will help you stay at the top of your game in the office and at home? Thales is hiring. Check out a full list of Thales Careers here.
