The Role of Storytelling in Communication
Amplifying Black Excellence
"Once upon a time" isn't just for fairytales. Being a compelling storyteller is a huge part of being a skilled communicator, especially in an increasingly virtual world. Subject matter expert Jonathan Bii, a professional Communications Manager based in Kenya, will join us to share a 360 degree view of the communications landscape and what tools you can use to take your communication skills to the next level. Jonathan will be joined in conversation by fellow Kenyan and PowerToFly team member Ian Anzabwa.
Jonathan Bii
Jonathan is passionate about writing, communications and storytelling. He currently leads communications at Book Bunk Trust, a social impact firm working to restore some of Nairobi’s most iconic public libraries. At Book Bunk, he has been a focal point for several campaigns including Book Bunk’s inaugural literary festival, #NBOLitfest.
Prior to joining Book Bunk, he led communications at Pangea Accelerator, a Nordic based startup accelerator and investment platform in East Africa working to leverage opportunities for African entrepreneurs. His communications efforts in Kenya’s startup tech space, commonly referred to as “Silicon Savannah”, contributed in advancing opportunities for entrepreneurs leading to increased funding and stakeholder engagement.
Now focused on increasing opportunities for creatives, Jonathan has been involved in different cultural/creative based programmes with the hope of promoting new models for storytelling and engaging with diverse audiences.
When he is not at his desk, you can catch him watching reruns of sitcoms, because, what is life, if you aren't always laughing?
Ian Anzabwa
My name is Ian Anzabwa. I’m a Talent Advocate Lead at PowerToFly. On top of matching individuals across the world to great opportunities, I lead an amazing team of Talent Advocates who do just the same on the daily! I’m big fan of making a positive impact on this amazing planet. However, in the past there always seemed to be one big and seemingly insurmountable question associated with my need to do so. The question regarded how exactly I would go about making this impact. I finally found my answer to this in talent acquisition.
Can you imagine if we lived in a world where everyone had purpose? A world where everyone loved the work they did? That sounds like a great world don't you think? This is precisely why I chose to make it my goal to imbue others with purpose by matching them to opportunities in which they can blossom and become so much more than anyone could ever imagine. In my current role at PowerToFly, this is precisely what I do everyday.
When I'm not busy connecting talented people to opportunities, I enjoy spending my time reading novels, learning new languages and taking the occasional road trip.
