About Our Subject Matter Expert
Derek Lipscomb is an educator, researcher, athlete, and racial literacy consultant aiming to learn more about inequitable practices in the educational, corporate, government, and athletic spaces. He is the founder of TheWork.Education, a website geared to help educators and administrators navigate racial discussions.
Through TheWork.Education Derek enables individuals to traverse the racial landscape by plotting out their own path based on their understandings and developing resources unique to their experiences. Derek has provided diversity consulting services to multiple organizations across different businesses in technology, finance, government, professional sports, and politics. In the past two years alone, he has engaged with over 20 businesses in rigorous DEI learning. In addition to engaging his clients in individual, self-work through reflective practices, his approach expands to organizations at large and into the constituencies with which they interact and serve.
He engages organizations in supplier diversity work by using community building and education as integral parts of his programming. Derek believes equity and inclusion are core values and aims to bring them into all his spaces and practices. As an avid rugby player for over 10 years, including playing for the United State Olympic Team and in London and New York, Derek co-founded Roots Rugby, an afro-centric, elite travel-rugby team based out of New York City. Aimed to serve as a platform for exposure to the highest levels of elite professional rugby, while maintaining a sense of self-confidence, understanding, and celebration of their heritage and culture, Roots Rugby has reached over 300 players since its inception in 2019.
