LGBTQIA+: Breaking Down the Acronym
On Monday, June 27th PowerToFly hosted an hour-long session where we joined Noelle Johnson, Global DEIB Strategist, and Trainer, and featured guest Niiya Grant who is a transgender & queer experience educator, motivational speaker, and liberator. Through a Q&A format, we gained a better understanding of the LGBTQIA+ acronym and discuss how we can be better allies for our colleagues who identify as part of the community.
In the spirit of continued learning, we're sharing access to the Courageous Conversation so that you can watch on your own time and learn more from our subject matter expert.
We answered some questions like…
- What is the most effective way for an advocate to educate themselves and others about the LGBTQIA+ community without pushing someone they are calling in away?
- Some terms in the community are newer to even to those that are in the community, what are some ways that everyone can stay on top of evolving language for the queer community to avoid offending and continuing to learn?
- We talk a lot about the hardships in being in the LGBTQIA community, but let's talk about joy. What do you love about being a Black transgender woman?
- How should we be raising the next generation in becoming educated advocates?
