Remote Work Round-Up

Working remote can mean more time for family, a healthier diet, and time for more exercise throughout the day. But how healthy is your home office? Here are five tips for designing a home office that keeps you happy and healthy in your remote role.

#1 Natural Light

Working in a dark cave can affect your mood AND your productivity. A 2013 study from Northwestern University found a strong correlation between the amount of workplace daylight exposure we get and our overall quality of life. Be sure to sit near a window if possible and open the blinds during the day to improve your focus, increase productivity, and get better sleep at night.

#2 Consider a Standing Desk

According to the National Institutes of Health, workers who sit at a desk most of the day have a higher risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. Adding a standing desk can protect your heart, help regulate your blood sugar, reduce lower back pain, and keep you energized throughout the day.

#3 Invest in Ergonomics

Ergonomic footrests, office chairs, and computer equipment help protect your lower back and spine from injury, especially if you're a chronic sloucher. Avoid unnecessary trips to the chiropractor with home office tools built specifically to keep you in proper alignment.

#4 Remove Toxins

Electronics, adhesives, paints, and inks are notorious for decreasing the air quality in your home where you don't have enormous ventilation systems like an office building would. Combat indoor air pollution by replacing these items with eco-friendly substitutes, and add some green plants to your work area as well.

#5 Add a Pop of Color

Different colors can trigger emotional reactions in our bodies that affect our mood and energy levels, so don't leave your color palette to chance! Create a more relaxing, laid back environment with greens, blues, and violets; add more energy to a room with yellow or red hues, and boost your creativity with bold purple shades. Cramped in small office that makes you feel overwhelmed? Minimize distractions and improve your focus with whites, grays, and other neutrals.
