Remote Work Round-Up

Our friends at Harvard Business Review recently wrote about how to stay focused when working remotely, a subject many people who work from home can tell you is of utmost importance. Laser focus is an essential quality for individuals who work outside of the office, and that concentration is far different than what's necessary to drown out Larry the mouth-breather three desks down or the wafting of microwaved fish coming from the communal workplace kitchen.

Elizabeth Grace Saunders is a professional time coach for remote workers, and gives Harvard Business Review some key tips on how to stay engaged and in the zone when working from home. She writes:

"No commute. No drive-by meetings. No dress code. Remote working can seem like a dream — until personal obligations get in the way. These distractions are easy to ignore in an office, but at home it can be difficult to draw the line between personal and professional time.

Consider when you're working on a project and get a call from a friend. You know you need to finish your work, but you feel rude for not talking when you technically could. Or think about when you're planning your daily to-do list, but also need to decide when you'll squeeze in your personal commitments. Taking the time to put a few loads of laundry in the washer midday can seem like a quick task — until you find yourself making up that work time late at night. In the end, it's never entirely clear when you're really "on" or "off.""

Saunders' tips include:

Establish working hours: Because no one wants to be attached to their computer at 3am on the daily

Structure your day for success: Make meeting-less hours professional me time

Set boundaries with others: No, mom - just because I work from home DOES NOT MEAN I can now chat all day, everyday

What is a DEI hire — and is it a fair term?

As workplaces evolve, the term “DEI hire” has become a point of contention. For some, it represents a commitment to diversity and inclusion; for others, it raises concerns about tokenism and fairness.

This debate has recently intensified as broader conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion face growing scrutiny. Following a 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down race-conscious college admissions, legal and political challenges to DEI initiatives surged. Critics argue that these measures unfairly disadvantage historically dominant groups (think White Americans or those who’ve faced fewer systemic barriers), while supporters maintain that DEI is essential for creating equitable opportunities.

Discover careers that align with introverts' strengths — plus top career growth tips

Picture two employees, let’s call them Taylor and Reese. Taylor is energetic, always up for a meeting or a quick call, and happy to work in a team. In fact, the larger the team, the happier she is. She's chatty, fun, spontaneous, and charismatic.

Reese is also very talented, but he’s more reserved. He avoids spontaneous meetings and dreads unexpected calls. After work, you won’t find Reese headed to drinks with coworkers, and at least at work, some would say Reese keeps to himself. While Taylor likes to lead presentations, Reese prefers to listen and analyze.

Building a stellar onboarding checklist

Onboarding is more than simply an HR task; it’s the first major step in preparing new employees for long-term success. When done well, an inclusive onboarding process fosters a welcoming and engaging atmosphere, increasing employee morale and retention. An efficient onboarding checklist helps expedite the process, ensuring that nothing critical is forgotten and that every new recruit feels encouraged, valued, and prepared to contribute from the start.

In fact, data indicates that organizations with a well-structured onboarding process increase new hire retention by 82% and productivity by 70%. This data demonstrates how critical it is to focus on providing an inclusive onboarding experience that not only welcomes new workers but also establishes the foundation for a long, fruitful relationship.
